Application Questions
What do you expect to gain from participating in the FOUNDING LAB?
My mental model. One of my long-term goals is to have a very accurate representation of the world in my mind. Having a well-developed intuition of how the world works will help me make better decisions and improve the quality of my life and the people around me. I want to interact with students and young professionals working in industries different from mine. I would like to see the world through their eyes.
Growing up, each of us was exposed to a different culture and social structure. This means that our brains are wired uniquely. Everybody perceives the world around them differently. I want to explore where our points of view converge and where they are distinct. I am aware that I have many blind spots. The truth is that no one alone can see a complete picture of reality. From participating in Founding Lab I expect to gain a greater sense of awareness of myself and the world.
How do you plan to contribute to the FOUNDING LAB? What value will you add to the overall program and to other participants?
I am a very good communicator and find it easy for me to relate to other people. My role in teams is usually to coordinate efforts and maintain the group working toward the same goal.
Friends consider me very empathetic and open-minded. Sometimes I play the role of mediator when internal conflict arises. I consider myself very adaptable. I can complement the work of my peers and do whatever work is needed, even if it lies outside of my comfort zone.
What topics excite you outside your field of studies? What interests and passions do you have?
I love writing software. I'm a competitive programmer. I regularly compete in programming contests that involve creating algorithms to solve a set of logical or mathematical problems. Last year I represented my university in the Central Europe Regional Contest of the International Collegiate Programming Contest.
I also enjoy taking part in hackathons and other software development/design competitions. I like working on the engineering challenges that this kind of contest proposes. The adrenaline of assembling a prototype in a reduced time window is one of the best parts, although my favourite part is at the beginning when we run the root cause analysis of the issue with my teammates, and we have to brainstorm software solutions for it.
What does it take to drive change?
I think human beings are usually resistant to change by nature. Probably because of the high degree of uncertainty associated with change. For issues like climate change, the transition could be perceived as a threat to economic growth and lifestyle.
In my opinion, change starts inside the mind of people. Once we get people to change the way people think, they will start doing things differently. When a large group of people change their habits, the underlying societal structure will also change.
To drive the change we need to present a clear vision of the future. On one hand, it should be a rational plan of action that doesn't leave room for doubt. On the other hand, we should also be able to connect emotionally with the people while communicating the message, because cold rationality it's not enough.
